With their danceable indie pop styling that remained heartfelt at the same time, the three-piece of Aberdeen brought on their warm, minimal innocence to their native of North Hollywood, CA. With the lineup consisting of John (guitar/drum programming), Jenni (guitar/keyboard/vocals), and Beth (vocals/bass) providing a lyrical bliss of rainy days, Sarah Records first captured Aberdeen’s sound on the 1994 single Byron. But following the 1995 release of their second EP Snapdragon, the trio called it quits with Beth eventually moving on to form Casino Ashtrays. As time went by, Beth and John came back together and started recording in the spring of 2002 with former Mighty Lemon Drop David Newton, resulting in the full length Homesick and Happy to Be Here. Singles The Boy Has Gone Away and Florida followed several years later.

Homesick and Happy to Be Here is the only studio album released by Aberdeen. Released in 2002, it includes the song ‘Sink or Float’, which was featured in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and gave the band their biggest exposure yet.

1. ‘Handsome Drink’ (3:16)

The Simple Carnival

July 3rd, 2008 -- Posted in Twee Music | No Comments »

About The Simple Carnival: While the music appears to sound like a band with orchestral embellishments, all the parts are actually performed by one person. A guy named Jeff Boller sings, writes songs, and plays piano, guitar, bass, drums, flute, cello, and a bunch of other toys.

Jeff Boller has been making music for quite a few years now, and Me And My Arrow is his third official release as The Simple Carnival. A full album - Girls Aliens Food - is scheduled for an October release (and is already available for pre-order on the official homepage!).

Me And My Arrow is a short and sweet, sunny afternoon stroll through the musical mind of Boller. The four tracks are all instantly loveable, from the breezy Caitlin’s On The Beach to lightfooted Harry Nilsson-cover Me And My Arrow. And Really Really Weird isn’t really that weird… at least not as a song. The video on the other hand… well, decide for yourself by watching it below! :) Btw.: the video was made by Jeff Boller himself, as he states with “$7.25 in office supplies and two weeks of free time”. I think it turned out quite good! The Simple Carnival

Camera Obscura - Lloyd I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken

Camera Obscura - Lloyd I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken

Camera Obscura was formed in 1996 by Tracyanne Campbell, John Henderson, and Gavin Dunbar. The band’s first releases were the singles “Park and Ride” and “Your Sound” in 1998. The Rare UK Bird EP followed in 1999.

Camera Obscura’s first album, Biggest Bluest Hi Fi, was recorded in 2000 and released in 2001. The album was supported by John Peel and charted in several independent music charts. The band’s second album Underachievers Please Try Harder was released in 2003 and was followed by Camera Obscura’s first full tour of Britain and Ireland and the band’s first tour of the United States. Founding member John Henderson left Camera Obscura following this tour.

Camera Obscura recorded their third album, Let’s Get Out of This Country, in 2005. It was released June 6, 2006. The first single, “Lloyd, I’m Ready to Be Heartbroken”, is a response to Lloyd Cole and the Commotions’ song “Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken?”

Totally Twee Fashion: Flats

July 1st, 2008 -- Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Okay, this is sort of bordering on too girly and almost a bit chabby chic, but aren’t these Penny Loves Kenny Women’s Posh Peep Toe Dress Flats the sweetest you’ve ever seen?! I guess it’s the anticipation of warm weather that’s giving me a little spring fever, but I just love the mint green upper with the tiny bow, tiny scallop trim and tiny delicate daisy cutouts! I would totally wear these with some cute jeans, frilly top and some dangly earrings.

These also come in yellow, light pink and ivory. Spring will definitely be in your steps if you’re wearing these.
